Initial investigations showed the woman had found the puppy unwell and brought it to the clinic for treatment last Monday. The dog remained under medical care and died the following day, according to the source.

He said suspicious injuries were found on the animal, suggesting it had been abused. Clinic staff called police at 2.21pm on Tuesday.

The case is the third of its kind reported in a week.

On Monday, a nine-year-old Yorkshire terrier suspected to have been brutally abused died about a week after undergoing an operation to remove 18 fragments in its skull.

Police are searching for the boyfriend of the pet owner’s mother in connection with the case. Separately last Wednesday, police arrested a 22-year-old man on suspicion of ill-treating his husky.

That case came to light after a video posted online showed the dog in a metal cage with its head hanging out of an opening before a lid was closed on the animal and someone’s hand could be seen pressing down on the flap in an apparent attempt to briefly strangle it.

Officers arrested the man in his Sha Tin flat and found the 18-month-old husky safe, along with a seven-month-old puppy of the same breed, at the premises. Police said no apparent injuries were found on the animals.

It is understood that the investigation suggested the alleged act was a punishment for the dog’s bad behaviour.

In Hong Kong, animal cruelty is punishable by up to three years in jail and a HK$200,000 (US$25,500) fine.
